To survive winters at that altitude the goats grow a very fine undercoat, and that undercoat is the raw material for this scarf — the fibre traditionally known as \u003cem\u003epashmina\u003c\/em\u003e. So if you have been looking for a small pashmina, this is one: pashmina is simply the finest grade of cashmere. The goats belong to Tibetan nomad families whose way of life has been shaped by this landscape for generations. We have worked with these families directly and in person since 2015, so we know where the fibre comes from and how it is gathered.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eColour \u0026amp; material\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scarf comes in 20 shades. Three are left undyed, so the colour is the fibre's own — white, caramel and brown, as it comes off the goat. The other 17 are dyed in Germany to EU\/REACH standards, with full wastewater treatment. Dyeing in Germany costs more than dyeing in Asia, but it lets us control exactly which chemicals go into the fibre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCraft\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt our partner mill in Pathankot in northern India, the cashmere is spun into a fine yarn and woven on semi-automatic looms into a scarf of about 62 grams. The mill employs more than 40 people.
