Some trade fairs are about transactions. Innatex is about conviction.
Walking through the halls of the Messecenter Rhein-Main in mid-January, what strikes you is not the volume of product on display — it's the shared language. Everyone here has already decided that fashion can be made differently. The question is just how.
I visited the 57th edition of Innatex as CHANGTANGI — a Pashmina brand built on direct relationships with Changthangi goat herders at 4,500 metres on the Changthang plateau of Ladakh. This was a scouting trip. A first conversation with a fair we intend to call home.
The world's most important platform for sustainable textiles
Innatex has been running since 1997 — a fact that matters. This is not a fair that rode the sustainability wave; it preceded it. Over nearly three decades it has grown into the largest international trade and order fair for sustainable textiles in the world, held twice yearly at Hofheim-Wallau near Frankfurt.
Around 244 labels from 20 countries exhibit here, across apparel, accessories and footwear. Over 1,500 trade visitors come each edition — independent retailers, buyers, press — all operating from the same baseline of values. Entry is free for registered trade visitors.
The winter 2026 edition carried the theme TOGETHER — fitting for a sector that is responding to economic pressure not by competing harder, but by collaborating more honestly. The atmosphere confirmed it: more community than commerce, more conversation than pitch.
The supporting programme reflected that spirit. A new format in partnership with TextilWirtschaft — the TW-Experten-Talk — brought discussions of the real challenges facing Green Fashion businesses to the fair floor. I enjoyed all the sessions and wondered why the stage was so small and the audience as well. The Design Discoveries initiative continued to give newcomer labels subsidised stand space and genuine visibility in front of a qualified trade audience.
The IVN — an association that sets the standard
One of the most inspiring parts of the visit was encountering the work of the IVN — Internationaler Verband der Naturtextilwirtschaft. Founded in 1999, the IVN is the independent association for companies working with natural textiles and natural leather across the full value chain. It has over 100 member companies and is one of the initiators of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
The IVN's own quality marks — Naturtextil IVN certified BEST and Naturleder IVN certified — represent the strictest ecological and social standards in the global textile industry. GOTS compliance is the minimum requirement to even qualify. Fair wages, no child labour, freedom from harmful substances, 100% natural fibre sourcing: these are the basic requirements for IVN members.
What the IVN offers beyond certification is a genuine network — consultation, business contacts, specialist workshops through the IVN Academy, and political representation for an industry that still has to fight for its place in mainstream policy discussions.
Joining the IVN is a clear goal for CHANGTANGI. Our GOTS certification is underway. Our supply chain — direct relationships with nomadic herding families at Tso Moriri, traceable from fibre to finished scarf — already meets the spirit of what the IVN stands for. Formalising that through membership is the natural next step.
Next time — with a stand
Innatex runs twice a year. The summer 2026 edition takes place 18 – 20 July at the Messecenter Rhein-Main.
We plan to join INNATEX in 2027 as exhibitor.
